We're now two weeks into the Lions MMA Club Kids BJJ Summer Camp, and it has been everything we hoped for — and then some. The mats have been full every morning, the kids have been showing up with energy and enthusiasm, and the progress we're seeing week-on-week has been genuinely impressive.
What the Kids Have Been Working On
Over the first two weeks, the camp has covered the fundamental building blocks of Brazilian jiu-jitsu: movement, base, posture, and the core positions every grappler needs to know. Kids have been drilling guard retention, learning basic sweeps and escapes, and getting comfortable with live rolling in a safe, controlled environment. From complete beginners to kids with a bit of mat experience, everyone has been levelling up.
The coaches have been blown away by how quickly the younger ones are picking things up. There's something special about teaching kids — they don't overthink it, they just move, adapt, and improve. We've already seen some of them pulling off techniques in sparring that they only learned a few days prior.
The Energy on the Mats
Beyond the technique, what makes a camp like this work is the atmosphere — and this group of kids has brought it every single day. They're encouraging each other, cheering on their training partners, and building friendships on the mats that go beyond the gym. It's been a real pleasure to coach.
